As you lie on the private beach at the Salamis Bay Conti Resort Hotel, your eyes are drawn to the far shores of the Karpas Peninsula, home to one of the most magnificent beaches in North Cyprus, Golden Beach.
Golden Beach curves gently around the southern tip of the Karpas Peninsula for over 5km, that’s 5km of clean, golden sand, just waiting for you to enjoy! It’s so long, that chances are, you’ll only be sharing it with a few others even in the height of summer.
As you enter the Karpaz Peninsula, it’s like stepping back in time. The new road winds amongst the rocks, before disappearing into lanes seemingly untouched by developments. It’s quiet, peaceful and very beautiful, just the way nesting sea turtles like it. No wonder these rare creatures choose Golden Beach as a main nesting site – it’s a great place for kids of any kind!
Park your North Cyprus hire car, then watch as your little ones race through the sand dunes that shelter the beach for their first glimpse of the sea. They’ll probably ask why it’s called Golden Beach, when the sands actually look red in the sunshine, but a quick trip to the Turtle Beach Restaurant for a freshly grilled kebab should sort out any awkward questions! In true North Cyprus fashion, most beaches have at least two names. Golden Beach is also known as Nangomi Beach, and runs into another beach known as Karpaz Turtle Beach.
If you do spot any nesting turtles, take care not to disturb them or their nests. Sea turtles are a heavily protected species, and during the breeding season there are restrictions on beach activities such as barbeques. If you want to know more about the turtles, ask Hasan, the owner of the Turtle Beach Restaurant, as he’s a local expert!
Within 90 minutes drive, you can be back in the comfort of the Salamis Bay Conti Resort Hotel, sipping a cocktail as the sun goes down over the Karpas Peninsula, making Golden Beach glow a extra deep rich red in the North Cyprus sunset.
